In the midst of a relentless natural disaster, Nepal has been grappling with escalating flood warnings as the death toll continues to rise. The combined death toll in Nepal and Tibet has now reached 768, with over 3,000 individuals still reported missing, according to authorities. The Nepal disaster agency has confirmed 752 deaths and 2,502 missing within the country, while Chinese authorities have reported 16 deaths and 546 missing on the Tibetan side of the border, including over 100 Nepalis and citizens from over a dozen other nations.

Amid the ongoing chaos, flood warning notices have been issued to residents' phones throughout the morning after a surge in the Bhotekoshi river levels. Rescue crews have been working tirelessly to clear a major highway that connects Kathmandu to one of the most severely affected areas. The Nepal Army reported on Sunday that heavy overnight rain and rising river levels have since hindered further progress in the rescue operation, which is now entering its fifth day.

The trapped workers are among the 933 people employed at hydropower projects who have been reported missing since Wednesday's flood. Nepal's prime minister's office highlighted the challenging conditions faced by the rescue teams, who have worked nonstop overnight under continuous rainfall. The teams are utilizing advanced search cameras and specialized monitors to locate any potential survivors.

International assistance has been deployed to the rescue effort, with specialized tunnel-rescue teams from India and China joining the operation alongside Nepal's own mountain rescue specialists. The latest flood warnings came after Chinese authorities alerted their Nepali counterparts to increased water flow upstream, according to Dharam Raj Uprety, the chief executive of Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority.

The scale of the devastation is evident in the town of Galchhi, where residents have sought refuge on a nearby bridge as they watch the river roar past, carrying away enormous boulders that had been washed downstream during Wednesday's floods. The riverbank's rice terraces have collapsed into the water after landslides, leaving homes, vehicles, and farm tractors jutting from the thick grey-brown sediment that has enveloped the worst-hit areas.

Local residents have expressed the toll that repeated flood alerts are taking on their mental and physical well-being. "Sometimes they say a flood is coming, then we have to run again to higher ground, even at night. There is also rain," said Govind Shreshta, a local resident. "It's really difficult for me. I have a 72-year-old father and 70-year-old mom. I must carry them and I am exhausted. It's going on like this for those who are still alive."

The situation is further complicated by the fact that homes and businesses that remain standing are still without electricity, with twisted power poles and tangled wires left lying in the mud. The Nepal Electricity Authority reported that 11 hydropower stations and one solar power station, with a combined capacity of 431.1 megawatts, had stopped operating, representing about 10 percent of the country's installed generating capacity. Additionally, 15 power projects under construction, with a combined planned capacity of 470 megawatts, have also been damaged.

The Prithivi Highway, a crucial supply route for food and fuel entering Kathmandu, remains mostly operational, although sections are still closed.
