In Berkeley, California, restaurant owner Binita Poudel, who operates Taste of the Himalayas on Shattuck Avenue, fears that up to 10 of her relatives may be missing following the deadly flash flood that ravaged parts of a border region in Nepal. The flood, which struck with little warning, has left countless families in despair as they await news of their missing kin.
"I called them. Nobody picks up the phone," Poudel said, describing the heart-wrenching wait for information. Despite the uncertainty, she remains hopeful, clinging to the faintest glimmer of hope that her relatives are alive and well, perhaps just out of reach.
The disaster has resonated deeply with the Bay Area's Nepalese community, which has been closely following the unfolding tragedy through media reports and personal connections. Taste of the Himalayas hosted a vigil and fundraiser on Sunday night, an event designed to bring community members together to pray for the missing and raise funds for humanitarian relief efforts.
"A little bit helps. One dollar helps," Poudel said. "It's good for everyone."
The flood and landslides have also impacted Hercules City Councilmember Dilli Bhattari, a Nepal native who spent nearly two days unable to contact his nephew, Prakash, who was traveling in Nepal on a spiritual journey. The uncertainty was "devastating," Bhattari said, but he was eventually able to confirm his nephew's safety.
"Almost 24 to 48 hours we were disconnected," Bhattari said. "Devastating moments for my family."
Many families, however, remain in limbo as they wait for word from relatives in the disaster zone. In response to the crisis, the City of Hercules hosted its own community vigil to support those affected and provide comfort to local families with ties to Nepal.
"This is one thing I never imagined," Bhattari said. "So fast, so quick, so unimaginable, impacting so many lives."
The events organized by the Bay Area Nepalese community are not only a means of providing emotional support to those affected but also a platform for raising funds to aid in the relief efforts. Organizers hope that these efforts will help families reunite and assist with the rebuilding of communities destroyed by the disaster.
As the floodwaters recede and the true extent of the damage becomes apparent, the Nepalese community in the Bay Area is determined to stand together in the face of adversity. The tragedy has brought them closer, fostering a sense of unity and resilience in the face of loss.
"This is a time when we need to come together and support each other," Poudel said. "We are a strong community, and we will get through this together."
