Nigerian Dancer Ben Dancer Attempts 168-Hour Non-Stop Marathon to Break Guinness World Record

A 33-year-old Nigerian dancer is attempting to make history by dancing continuously for seven full days, a feat that, if verified, would smash the existing world record for the longest individual dance marathon by more than a day and a half.

Benjamin Daniel, who performs under the stage name Ben Dancer, is seeking to remain in motion for 168 hours at Freedom Park in Lagos. That target exceeds the current Guinness World Record of 127 hours, which was set in 2023 by Indian dancer Srushti Sudhir Jagtap when she was just 16 years old.

The attempt began on Tuesday, 22 September, and if Ben Dancer maintains his pace, he is expected to reach his goal in the early hours of Tuesday morning. His performance has drawn steady crowds of young Nigerians to the open-air venue, where supporters have gathered behind barriers, recorded his every movement on their phones, and danced along in solidarity. The atmosphere around the park has taken on the character of a street festival, with videos from the attempt circulating widely on social media and pulling even more spectators to the site.

Guinness World Records has not yet confirmed whether the attempt will be officially recognised. The BBC has reached out to the organisation for a response. This pending verification is a standard part of the record-approval process, during which the body reviews evidence, witness statements, and compliance with its strict guidelines.

Under the rules governing such marathons, Ben Dancer is permitted to take five minutes of rest for every continuous hour of activity. Rather than pausing every 60 minutes, he has chosen to dance for extended stretches before cashing in his accumulated rest time. Throughout the marathon, his team says he has consumed light meals and fluids to sustain his energy. A medical team has been stationed at Freedom Park to monitor his condition and step in if necessary.

The physical demands of the attempt are extreme. His team has said he prepared with an intensive fitness regimen, altering his diet to emphasise carbohydrates and working on cardiovascular conditioning. The combination of sleep deprivation, physical exhaustion, and the mental strain of performing before a live audience for a week presents challenges that go well beyond ordinary endurance.

Ben Dancer is no newcomer to dance. He has been performing professionally for 18 years and has built his marathon around Nigeria's rich and varied dance traditions. Afrobeats — the genre that has carried Nigerian music to global prominence — has been a constant feature of his set, alongside fuji, jazz, and zouk. At various points, he has traded his usual dance attire for traditional Nigerian garments such as the flowing agbada and the dashiki, visually underscoring the cultural breadth of the performance.

Nigeria is home to more than 250 ethnic groups, each with its own distinct cultural practices and dance forms. Ben Dancer's team has stressed that the attempt is meant to celebrate that diversity, not merely to test the limits of one man's stamina. The performance has thus become a showcase of national heritage as much as a bid for a place in the record books.

Spectators have described the event in emotional terms. Uche Anumudu, one of those watching from the crowd, told the BBC that witnessing Ben Dancer's progress stirred a deep sense of pride. She said the moment was beautiful and that seeing how far he had come made her feel incredibly grateful.

Others have expressed a mixture of admiration and concern. Moronumubo Akodu, who has visited the venue repeatedly to show support, said his determination impressed her, but she also worried about the toll the marathon might be taking on his body. She described the whole endeavour as somewhat insane while adding that she felt immensely proud of him.

Emmanuel Ulelu, who attended the performance twice, noted a striking shift in the dancer's energy over the days. He said that by day two, the strain was plainly visible, and that after dancing for only three hours himself at the venue, he wondered how Ben Dancer could possibly continue. Yet when he returned 16 hours into day five, he found the dancer looking more energetic than before — a turnaround that left him reflecting on what people can accomplish when their desire to achieve something outmatches the difficulty of the task.

The Lagos attempt fits into a broader pattern of record-breaking enthusiasm in Nigeria, particularly in the entertainment sector. In 2023, Nigerian chef Hilda Baci cooked continuously for 93 hours and 11 minutes in Lagos, an achievement Guinness World Records officially recognised. Her cook-a-thon triggered a surge of interest in record attempts across the country, even though other chefs have since surpassed her mark.

According to Guinness, the organisation received more than 1,500 new applications from Nigeria within two months of Hilda Baci's feat. The proposed categories ranged widely, from reading and singing to crocheting, illustrating how her success inspired Nigerians to pursue their own unlikely ambitions on the world stage.

For Ben Dancer, the coming hours will determine whether his 18 years of professional dance training and months of physical preparation translate into an officially ratified world record. Whether or not Guinness confirms the attempt, the scene at Freedom Park has already become a celebration of Nigerian culture, youth energy, and the growing appetite for global recognition that has come to define the country's recent record-breaking wave.
