Former SABC Sports Broadcaster Owen Ndlovu Slain Following Abduction and Carjacking in Gauteng

Tributes and grief have swept across South Africa following the tragic death of veteran sports broadcaster Owen Ndlovu, whose body was discovered with gunshot wounds on Wednesday morning just hours after he was kidnapped during a violent carjacking outside Johannesburg.

The 54-year-old media personality, widely recognized for his extensive work with the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), was kidnapped on Tuesday evening in the township of Katlehong. His sudden death has sent shockwaves through the nation's sporting, broadcasting, and arts communities, while prompting renewed public outrage over persistent violent crime.

Ndlovu’s body was spotted the next morning by community members along a road in the adjacent township of Thokoza. Witnesses at the scene reported that he appeared to have sustained multiple gunshot wounds, and a personal bag belonging to the broadcaster was recovered lying on the ground just a short distance from where his remains were found.

Law enforcement authorities revealed that the abduction took place while Ndlovu was waiting to collect his wife following a religious service. According to Gauteng provincial police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, the broadcaster was seated inside his vehicle outside the Katlehong church when the assailants launched their ambush.

As Ndlovu's wife walked toward the car, three unidentified men suddenly closed in on the couple. Nevhuhulwi stated that at least one of the attackers was brandishing a firearm. The armed suspects shoved Ndlovu’s wife to the side, overpowered the broadcaster, and forced him into the back seat of his own vehicle before speeding away from the premises.

The stolen vehicle, a Ford Raptor pick-up truck—commonly referred to across South Africa as a bakkie—was subsequently tracked down and recovered by police after being abandoned in Walkerville, a rural area located south of Johannesburg. However, the three perpetrators had already fled the scene and remain at large.

The South African Police Service has initiated an extensive manhunt to locate and arrest the three suspects involved in the fatal hijacking. While detectives have registered a formal murder case, official spokespersons indicated that a forensic post-mortem examination is being conducted to definitively establish the exact cause and timing of Ndlovu's death.

Speaking on behalf of the grieving household, family spokesperson Eugene Mthethwa expressed profound sorrow over the incident, describing the sudden loss of the media veteran as utterly devastating. Mthethwa noted that the family is maintaining close contact with investigators as they await further clarity on the precise circumstances leading up to the killing.

The family also conveyed heartfelt gratitude to the local residents, community members, and law enforcement officers who swiftly mobilized search efforts and raised the alarm after news of the broadcaster's abduction initially surfaced on Tuesday night.

Ndlovu enjoyed a distinguished and multifaceted career within the South African media landscape, becoming a household name through his work as both a television and radio presenter and producer for the national broadcaster. Throughout his tenure at the SABC, he brought live coverage and analysis of the Premier Soccer League to millions of football fans across the country.

Beyond his contributions to sports journalism, Ndlovu was an active campaigner within the South African creative sector. He dedicated substantial energy to championing the economic rights of local recording artists, fighting for fair royalty distributions, and working alongside organizations such as Artists United and initiatives including the SABC Summer Song of the Year.

Colleagues and media peers have spoken warmly of Ndlovu's dynamic character and vibrant on-air presence. Writing for the Mail & Guardian, fellow journalist Lelo Mzaca paid tribute to Ndlovu's zest for life, noting that the broadcaster had led a colourful, energetic life and brought an unmatched enthusiasm to his reporting, leaving behind a unique legacy in South African sports journalism.

In response to the killing, provincial authorities issued an appeal to township residents and the broader public, urging anyone with information regarding the perpetrators to cooperate fully with police detectives. Officials emphasized that confronting the surge of violent criminal activity in Gauteng remains an urgent governmental priority.

The fatal hijacking of Ndlovu has once again thrust the spotlight onto South Africa's severe challenges regarding armed robberies, carjackings, and fatal gun violence. High-profile hijackings continue to pose a severe threat to everyday citizens and public figures alike, particularly in urban townships around major metropolitan areas.

Official national crime statistics covering the three-month period between April and June 2026 reflect the scale of the challenge facing law enforcement agencies, with more than 5,000 homicides and nearly 4,000 reported carjackings recorded across the country in that timeframe alone.

When presenting those quarterly figures, acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia acknowledged that pervasive violent crime continues to inflict deep fear upon communities nationwide. Cachalia warned that many of these attacks are orchestrated by heavily armed, organized criminal syndicates that carry out hijackings and robberies with alarming planning and sophistication.
