In a heart-stopping display of bravery and quick thinking, a headteacher in Nepal has been hailed as a hero after orchestrating the evacuation of 900 pupils from his school minutes before a catastrophic floodwave struck. Rajenda Dawadi, the headteacher of Tribhuvan Trishuli secondary school in the Nuwakot district, received several phone calls about the impending flood around 15 minutes prior to its arrival.

"I told myself: if there's no flood, we lose a day of studies. But if there is a flood, we all lose our lives," Dawadi explained, underscoring the gravity of his decision to order an immediate evacuation. The 900 children at the school, which is situated along the banks of the Trishuli River, immediately fled on foot. Amidst the chaos, panic briefly erupted as the pupils ran out, and one girl had to be evacuated by motorcycle to the hospital after fainting.

Dawadi's actions didn't end there. He also managed to divert school buses that were reportedly carrying hundreds more children on their way to school, ensuring their safety as well. "If we had made the decision 10 minutes later, all of us, including the students and me, would not be able to speak to you today," the teacher told BBC, reflecting on the narrow window of time he had to act.

The school was hit particularly hard by the floods, which followed a glacier collapse in Tibet. The death toll from the floods has now risen to more than 800 across Nepal and China, with entire villages destroyed and significant economic damage reported. The disaster has also left more than 3,000 people missing on both sides of the border, including hundreds of foreign nationals.

One of the pupils saved by Dawadi, 16-year-old Yunisha, recounted her narrow escape to BBC. She managed to reach safety just seconds before the flood hit, running uphill along a muddy path behind the school while her village was destroyed by the overwhelming force of water and debris. "Almost nothing remains of the school building," Dawadi said, noting the severe damage caused by the flood.

The school, which was once a place of learning and growth, now stands as a testament to the heroism of Dawadi and the bravery of the students he saved. At least one member of staff was killed in the flood, further highlighting the devastating impact of the disaster.

Dawadi's quick thinking and decisive action have earned him widespread praise and admiration. He has become a symbol of hope and resilience in the face of such a catastrophic event. The story of his heroism serves as a stark reminder of the power of human courage and the importance of preparedness in the face of natural disasters.

As the region continues to grapple with the aftermath of the floods, the story of Dawadi and the 900 pupils he saved has become a beacon of light in the darkness. It is a story that will be remembered for years to come, not only for the lives saved but also for the lessons it teaches about the strength of the human spirit and the importance of community in times of crisis.

In the wake of the disaster, there has been an outpouring of support from around the world. Aid organizations and governments have been working tirelessly to provide assistance to those affected by the floods, including food, shelter, and medical care. The efforts of Dawadi and the community he serves have inspired many, and they have become a source of hope for those still struggling to recover from the devastating impact of the floods.

As the world watches and supports the affected regions, the story of Dawadi and the 900 pupils he saved will serve as a powerful reminder of the human capacity for resilience and the indomitable spirit of those who face adversity.
