Police Launch Investigation After Missing Mother Found Dead in Australian Sand Dunes

Authorities in eastern Queensland, Australia, have initiated an investigation into the sudden death of a 31-year-old mother whose body was discovered hidden in coastal sand dunes four days after she was last seen in public. The discovery has prompted a coordinated multi-agency search and a public appeal for information as detectives attempt to piece together her final movements.

Emergency services were alerted to the situation shortly after 8:00 a.m. local time on Tuesday, Sept. 15, after a local resident walking his dogs came across human remains near the Mackay Harbour North Wall. The secluded location, situated in the coastal city of Mackay, quickly became the focal point of a large-scale police inquiry as uniformed officers and forensic investigators secured the scene.

Queensland Police subsequently confirmed the identity of the deceased woman as Payge Leembruggen. The 31-year-old was a mother to a 5-year-old boy and had been unaccounted for over a four-day period leading up to the grim discovery in the coastal reserve.

Prior to her death, Leembruggen was last seen on the morning of Friday, Sept. 11, around 8:55 a.m. at a commercial hair salon situated along Celeber Drive in the suburb of Andergrove. That commercial location sits approximately 3.9 miles directly west of the coastal dunes where her body was ultimately located by the passerby.

At the time of her last confirmed sighting, Leembruggen was described by law enforcement as being of Caucasian appearance, standing approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall, with brown hair. Investigators noted that she was wearing a distinctive outfit consisting of a white top, bright red trousers, and a red bow placed in her hair.

During a media briefing held on Wednesday, Sept. 16, Mackay Whitsunday District Detective Inspector Emma Novosel revealed that Leembruggen had not been officially reported missing to law enforcement agencies prior to the recovery of her body. The absence of a formal missing persons report meant that active community searches were not underway during the four days she was missing.

Detective Inspector Novosel provided background on Leembruggen’s personal life, explaining that the 31-year-old resided with members of her extended family in Mount Jukes. The rural locality of Mount Jukes is situated roughly 25 miles northwest of the Mackay Harbour area where her body was eventually recovered.

Novosel clarified that Leembruggen did not have a partner living with her at the Mount Jukes residence. Following the tragic news, her 5-year-old son has been placed into the direct care of other family members, who are supporting the child amidst the ongoing investigation.

Addressing Leembruggen's routine, investigators stated that it was not out of the ordinary for her to make the commute from her residence in Mount Jukes into the city of Mackay. However, the exact route and manner of transportation she used after leaving the Andergrove salon remain central questions for investigators.

Police are approaching the inquiry with significant caution. Detective Inspector Novosel emphasized the standard investigative protocol during the press conference, affirming that detectives consistently treat any unexplained death as suspicious until evidence formally proves otherwise.

The precise area where Leembruggen was found lies roughly 0.6 miles north of the North Wall car park. Novosel described the surrounding environment as heavily overgrown and challenging to navigate, characterized by thick vegetation and several interwoven paths. The dog walker who found her had reportedly taken a track he had not frequented for some time.

In response to the discovery, Queensland Police joined forces with volunteers from the State Emergency Service to conduct systematic ground searches across the sand dunes and surrounding coastal terrain. These search efforts are aimed at uncovering any potential physical evidence or personal belongings that might shed light on how she arrived at the location.

Authorities have scheduled a formal autopsy to determine the precise medical cause of death. At this stage of the investigation, police officials have declined to speculate on the potential causes or the timeline of events leading up to her death pending the official findings of the post-mortem examination.

The tragedy has left Leembruggen’s loved ones devastated. Detective Inspector Novosel expressed deep condolences on behalf of the police force, stating that the entire family is profoundly upset over the unexpected loss of their relative and that law enforcement's thoughts remain with them during this difficult period.

Queensland Police are continuing to appeal directly to the public for assistance. Detectives are urging anyone who may have spotted Leembruggen, observed suspicious activity near Mackay Harbour, or possessed knowledge regarding her whereabouts between Friday, Sept. 11, and Tuesday, Sept. 15, to immediately come forward and assist the ongoing inquiry.
